Le Morte d'Arthur

King Agwisance

Also known as: King Agwisance of Ireland / Sir Agwisance / the King of Ireland · Family: northern host · Role: king · First appears: Book I, Chapter XII

In Book I, Chapter XII, King Agwisance of Ireland joined Duke of Cambenet, King Brandegoris, King Clariance, King of the Hundred Knights, King Lot, King Urience, King Idres, King Cradelmas, King Nentres, and King Carados as allies against King Arthur. With their vast host, they besieged the castle of Bedegraine and advanced against him, having sworn that they would not part until Arthur was destroyed.

In Chapter XIV, King Agwisance helped King Brandegoris and King Idres put Sir Griflet and Lucas to the earth. In the following chapter, he fought alongside six kings against Lucas, Sir Gwinas, Briant, and Bellias of Flanders; Lucas then unhorsed him with a powerful spear thrust. Agwisance and Duke of Cambenet also drove Lionses and Phariance into mortal danger, while Agwisance came into rivalry with Lucas.

In Chapter XVI, Agwisance renewed his bond with the allied kings, including King Uriens and King Cradelment, agreeing that they would not fail one another in life or death. Much later, in Book VII, Chapter XXVIII, Sir Agwisance encountered Sir Gareth, who struck him from his horse, saddle and all.
