Myths of the Iroquois

Hemlock Bows

Role: hunter and father · First appears: The Hunter And His Faithless Wife

One day, Hemlock Bows’s son was born, and he was very fond of the boy. Three years later, his daughter was born. After the second child’s birth, his wife seemed to care no more for him; one day, he discovered her meeting and kissing another man.

His wife beat him until he could not see, drove the children into the cold and snow, burned their cabin, and left. The boy rescued Hemlock Bows, his sister, and their dog, then returned to the cabin and set it alight while his mother was inside. After Hemlock Bows recovered, he and the children went to live with a woman by the lake; Hemlock Bows married her, and the boy married her daughter.
