Abiram
Family: Reuben · Role: rebel · First appears: Numbers 16
Abiram was a rebel of Reuben, the son of Eliab and brother of Dathan. In Numbers 16, he joined Korah, Dathan, and On in leading a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, declaring, “Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy.”
When Moses sent for Abiram and Dathan, they refused to come. Their opposition was treated as rebellion against God: the earth opened and swallowed Abiram, Dathan, their households, tents, possessions, and those associated with Korah. Numbers 26 and Deuteronomy 11 later recalled that Abiram and Dathan were swallowed during the rebellion, becoming a sign among Israel.
