The Argonautica

Idas

Also known as: Aphareian Iclas / Iclas · Family: Argonauts · Role: hero · First appears: Book I 2

In Book I, Idas came from Arene as a son of Aphareus alongside his brother Lynceus. He was a friend to Jason, calling himself “Such a helpmeet am I that thou bringest from Arene,” but in Book I he also reviled Idmon until Jason and the other Argonauts restrained the quarrel.

That same night at Sacred Rock, Idas and Telamon and Clytius killed Promeus, Basileus, and Hyacinthus; “And Idas slew Promeus.” By Book III, he was in furious conflict with Jason, striking at his spear with his great sword.
