Greek Mythology

Ceto

First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.2

In Apollodorus, Library 1.2, Ceto is born to Pontus and Earth. She is also named among the offspring of Nereus and Doris, alongside the Nereids, and with Phorcus she becomes parent to the Phorcides and Gorgons: “to Phorcus and Ceto were born the Phorcides and Gorgons.”

In Apollodorus, Library 2.4, Phorcys has Enyo, Pephredo, and Dino by Ceto, and they are sisters of the Gorgons. Hesiod’s Theogony names Ceto and Phorcys as parents of the Graiae—Pemphredo and Enyo—and of the Gorgons Sthenno, Euryale, and Medusa, who dwell beyond Ocean toward Night and the Hesperides. In the later passage, Ceto is joined in love to Phorcys and bears her youngest, described as “the offspring of Ceto and Phorcys.”
