Don Quixote

Don Gaspar Gregorio

Also known as: Don Gregorio · Role: young gentleman disguised as a Moorish woman · First appears: Part 2, Ch. 63.3

In Part 2, Ch. 63.3, Don Gaspar Gregorio’s courtship with Ana Félix led him to accompany her into banishment. At Algiers, Ana Félix protected him by disguising him as a Moorish woman: “I dressed him as a Moorish woman, and that same afternoon I brought him before the king”; he was then placed among Moorish ladies of rank. Their love was mutual, as Ana Félix said, “his heart was lost to me, and mine not kept from him.”

In Ch. 63.4, Ricote, the renegade, the general, the viceroy, and Don Quixote were connected with plans to rescue him, while Don Antonio Moreno offered him shelter. Two days later the renegade put to sea, and by Ch. 65.1 Don Gregorio had reached the viceroy’s house. At Don Antonio Moreno’s house, he returned from Algiers, exchanged the woman’s dress for that of a captive who escaped with him, and accepted only five crowns lent by Don Antonio Moreno after Ricote offered him a thousand; he then parted from Ana Félix to visit his parents and seek her return.
