At the beginning of Part 1, Don Quixote sells farmland to buy books of chivalry, and prolonged reading and little sleep cause him to lose his wits. He decides to make himself a knight-errant, naming his horse Rocinante and Aldonza Lorenzo Dulcinea del Toboso, while at home he is employer to the housekeeper and elder kin to the niece. He argues with the curate over the greatest knight, though the curate and the barber are later described as his friends and try to manage his disorder. “he should make a knight-errant of himself, roaming the world over in full armour and on horseback in quest of adventures”
