Bede's Ecclesiastical History

Egbert (king of Kent)

Also known as: Egbert · Family: Kent · Role: king · First appears: Book III · Chap. XXIX

Around 664, Oswy and Egbert consulted on the state of the English Church and selected Wighard, one of Bishop Deusdedit’s clergy, to be sent to Rome for ordination as bishop and archbishop. In 668, Egbert inherited the kingdom of Kent from his father Earconbert and, with Oswy, again sent Wighard to Rome; when the bishop was found in the kingdom of the Franks, Egbert sent his reeve Raedfrid to bring him.

Egbert died in July 673, after which his brother Hlothere succeeded to the throne. Later, his son Edric raised the South Saxons against Hlothere, while another son, Wictred, was described as the lawful king settled on the throne.
