Bede's Ecclesiastical History

Wighard

Family: Church · Role: priest · First appears: Book III · Chap. XXIX

Wighard was a priest of the English Church and one of Deusdedit’s clergy. Around 664, Oswy and Egbert selected him, with the consent of the English Church, as “a good man and fitted for the episcopate,” and sent him to Rome to be ordained bishop and archbishop. Arriving there, he died before he could be consecrated.

In 668, Egbert and Oswy again sent Wighard to Rome to receive the archbishopric, describing him as “a man of great learning in the teaching of the Church, of the English race.” He made known to Vitalian the occasion of his journey, but soon died in a pestilence with almost all his companions.
