Twenty Years After

Raoul de Bragelonne

Also known as: Bragelonne / De Bragelonne / Raoul / Vicomte de Bragelonne · Role: young nobleman · First appears: Chapter 20

In 1633, a three-month-old Raoul was left at a priest’s house with gold and a note dated “11 October, 1633.” Ten years later, Athos was revealed as his father, and Marie Michon as his mother; Athos had taken responsibility for his education and made him an accomplished gentleman. He also transferred the estate of Bragelonne, its income, and the title of vicomte to Raoul.

By chapter 20, Raoul was engaged to Louise. Marie Michon promised him all the influence she still possessed, while Athos arranged for Prince de Marsillac to recommend the young nobleman to Madame de Longueville. In chapter 30, Raoul’s friendship with Count de Guiche deepened after the count’s aid saved him, and he expressed that he would otherwise have been “a dead man—thrice dead.” He also had deep and genuine sympathy for Madame de Chevreuse and had only been at M. Scarron’s house.

During the skirmish, Raoul and Count de Guiche ignored the retreat and charged into the forest toward the Spaniards. Raoul shot one at close range, knocking him back onto his horse, then was wounded in the left arm.
