Twenty Years After

Marie Michon

Also known as: Duchess de Chevreuse / Madame de Chevreuse · Role: duchess · First appears: Chapter 20

In 1633 at Tours, Marie Michon—also known as the Duchess de Chevreuse or Madame de Chevreuse—escaped in disguise with Kitty, who dressed as a lackey, while Marie dressed as a cavalier. Prince de Marsillac supplied their horses and brought her the green book; he was her old friend and later recommended her young friend to Madame de Longueville. Her identity was revealed to Athos when she said, “Marie Michon,” and she was also connected with Aramis, her cousin. Anne of Austria called her her sister, while Madame de Montbazon was her mother-in-law; she also wrote to warn Duke of Buckingham of a plot and mentioned going to Abbé Scarron.

In 1643, Marie Michon returned to France and immediately sought information about her child, Raoul de Bragelonne. She was his mother and intended to use all the influence she had on his behalf: “I have but little influence now, but all that I have shall most assuredly be his.”
