Madame de Chevreuse
Also known as: Duchess de Chevreuse / Marie / the duchess · Family: French nobility · Role: noblewoman · First appears: Chapter 4
In chapter 4, Mazarin and Madame de Chevreuse were enemies: he portrayed her as a woman of intrigue who had continued the cabal against him, while Anne of Austria was linked to her removal after twelve years of persecution under the previous reign. By chapter 8, Aramis had formerly been her lover. In chapter 9, Cardinal de Richelieu ordered her arrest and would have had her executed, but she escaped France with her waiting-maid, Kitty; after receiving permission, she returned and later joined the cabal headed by Duc de Beaufort.
In chapter 21, Madame de Chevreuse gave Athos a letter promising that Raoul would be extremely well received. She asked Aramis to serve her once more that evening, sought a meeting with Athos, and kissed Raoul’s forehead while offering him her good wishes. Raoul was described as happy to owe her an obligation, placing her in the role of his patron.
She supported Broussel after the attack by leaving her name at his door. In chapter 30, Raoul de Bragelonne defended her before Count de Guiche, despite the laughter directed at her. Athos later left his name at her residence, and after visiting her, Raoul de Bragelonne rejoined the army; he was also sometimes with her and sometimes with the queen of England. In chapter 89, Madame de Chevreuse was a rival to Madame de Longueville among the frondeuses, while also expressing a desire to spend a month at Bragelonne with Athos.
