Myths of the Cherokee

Kana'ti

Also known as: The Lucky Hunter · Role: the Lucky Hunter; husband of Selu · First appears: Myth 3 · Kana'ti and Selu: The Origin of Game and Corn · Part 1

In Myth 3, Kana'ti lived with Selu and their son, the little boy. They took in the Wild Boy and kept him at home until they had tamed him; when they discovered his magic powers, they called him I'nage-utasûñ'hi. A few days later, the boys opened Kana'ti’s game enclosure, releasing its animals and birds, and Kana'ti punished them with swarms of biting and stinging vermin.

When Kana'ti returned and learned that the boys had killed Selu, he left them and arranged for them to be attacked in a ball game. Much later, the brothers found him on the road and agreed to travel with him. Beyond the sky, they found Kana'ti and Selu together; after seven days with their parents, the boys went on to the Darkening land, where they became known as the Little Men. In Myth 72, Selu is identified as Kana'ti’s wife.
