Selu
Role: Corn; wife of Kana'ti · First appears: Myth 3 · Kana'ti and Selu: The Origin of Game and Corn · Part 1
Soon after the world was made, Selu lived at Pilot knob with Kana'ti and their only child, the little boy. After the Wild Boy sprang from the blood of game she had washed at the river, she and Kana'ti took him home and kept him until they had tamed him. Each day, Selu produced corn and beans in a basket by rubbing her body.
In Myth 3, the boys accused Selu of being a witch and killed her. Corn sprang wherever her blood fell; the boys found it ripe in the morning. When Kana'ti returned, he learned what had happened from the boys. At the end of the world, the two boys found Selu and Kana'ti sitting together, and after seven days went on to the Darkening land.
In Myth 72, Selu appeared to the hunter as a corn plant, taught him hunting secrets, and instructed him in how to become successful at hunting. At noon she took a woman’s form, rose into the air, and disappeared; the people later recognized her as Kana'ti’s wife.
