Pausanias' Description of Greece

Alcmæon

Family: mortal · Role: person excluded from honors with Amphiaraus and Amphilochus · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 34

In Book 1, Chapter 34, at Oropus, Alcmæon’s murder of Eriphyle deprived him of honors with Amphiaraus and Amphilochus. In Book 6, Chapter 17, after discovering that Phegeus’s relatives had plotted his murder, he moved to Elis; there he was father to Clytius by Phegeus’s daughter.

In Book 8, Chapter 24, Alcmæon fled Argos after slaying his mother and came to Psophis, where he married Alphesibœa, daughter of Phegeus. While he dwelt in Arcadia, the oracle of Apollo told him that his mother’s avenger would pursue him everywhere except a place newly made by the sea. He found such land where the Achelous had deposited silt, dwelt there, and married Callirhoe, daughter of Achelous; they had two sons, Acarnan and Amphoterus.

Callirhoe desired Eriphyle’s necklace and sent Alcmæon unwillingly to Phegia to obtain it. There Temenus (son of Phegeus) and Axion treacherously caused his death.
