Edwin
Also known as: King Edwin · Family: Northumbrians · Role: king · First appears: A.D. 560–625
In 601, Paulinus converted Edwin, king of the Northumbrians, to baptism. By 617, Edwin, son of Ella, had succeeded to the kingdom and subdued much of Britain, driving out Enfrid, Oswald, Oswy, Oslac, Oswood, Oslaf and Offa son of Ethelfrith.
In 626, Eamer, sent by Cwichelm, attempted to assassinate Edwin, killing his thane Lilla and Forthere and wounding the king. That same night, Edwin’s daughter Eanfleda was born. Within twelve months Edwin was baptized at Easter with all his people; in 627, Paulinus baptized them at York. In 633, Cadwalla and Penda slew Edwin and his son Osfrid at Hatfield Moor. Edwin had reigned seventeen years.
