The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Oswy

Family: Northumbrians · Role: Etheling · First appears: A.D. 560–625

Oswy was driven out of Britain with the other sons of Ethelfrith when Edwin succeeded to the kingdom in 617. After Oswald in 642, he succeeded to the government of the Northumbrians; in 644, Osric, the son of his uncle, assumed the government of Deira.

In 656, Wulfhere called Oswy his “wed-brother,” and Peada described him as his beloved friend, saying that they had begun a minster together. In 667, Oswy and Egbert sent the priest Wighard to Rome for consecration as Archbishop of Canterbury, but he died upon arrival. Oswy died in 670, and his son Egferth reigned after him.
