The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Paulinus

Role: bishop · First appears: A.D. 560–625

In 601, Paulinus converted Edwin to baptism. In 625, Justus consecrated him bishop of the Northumbrians; the following year, Eanfleda, Edwin’s daughter, was baptized, and Edwin gave Paulinus the bishopric, promising to devote his daughter to God if Paulinus helped him defeat his enemy. In 627, Paulinus baptized Edwin and his people, then consecrated Honorius Archbishop of Canterbury at Lincoln.

After Cadwalla and Penda ravaged Northumbria in 633, Paulinus fled by ship to Kent with Ethelburga, Edwin’s relict. Eadbald and Honorius received him and gave him the bishopric of Rochester, where he remained until his death.
