Greek Mythology

Erichthonius

Family: Athens · Role: king · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 3.12

Erichthonius is described in one account as the son of Dardanus and the brother of Ilus; when Ilus died childless, Erichthonius succeeded to the kingdom. Another account gives his parentage as Hephaestus and either Atthis, daughter of Cranaus, or Athena. Athena brought him up in secret and placed him in a chest entrusted to Pandrosus, forbidding her to open it: “Him Athena brought up unknown to the other gods.”

After Amphictyon had reigned twelve years, Erichthonius expelled him and became king of Athens. He married Astyoche, daughter of Simoeis, and they had Tros; he also married Praxithea, a Naiad nymph, by whom he had Pandion.
