Hagar

Also known as: Sarai's maid · Role: handmaid · First appears: Genesis 16

Hagar, Sarai’s Egyptian maid, was given by Sarah to Abraham as a concubine after he had dwelt ten years in Canaan. When Hagar conceived by Abraham, Sarah dealt harshly with her, and Hagar fled; at Shur, God commanded her to return and submit to Sarah, promised to multiply her descendants, and foretold her son Ishmael. Hagar bore Ishmael, and Abraham named him.

When Isaac was weaned, Sarah demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be cast out, and Abraham sent them away with bread and water. In the wilderness of Beersheba, God promised to make Ishmael a great nation and revealed a well to Hagar: “And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water;” she filled the bottle and gave her son drink.
