The Five Books of Moses

Ishmael

Family: Ishmaelites · Role: son of Abram and Hagar · First appears: Genesis 16

At Shur in Genesis 16, God foretold through Hagar that her son would be named Ishmael. Hagar bore him to Abraham, and Abraham gave him the name Ishmael: “And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.” In Genesis 17, God blessed Ishmael and promised that he would become exceedingly fruitful, father twelve princes, and form a great nation; Abraham circumcised him with the men of his household.

By Genesis 25, Ishmael had sons including Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. He died at the age of 137, and Abraham was buried by his sons Isaac and Ishmael in the cave of Machpelah. His daughters included Mahalath and Bashemath; Mahalath was the sister of Nebajoth, and Esau took her as his wife.
