The herdswoman's daughter Suśroṇī (Chapter 012)
Also known as: Suśroṇī · Role: daughter and wife of King Brahmadatta · First appears: Chapter XII
Suśroṇī was the daughter of the herdswoman near the palace, and King Brahmadatta took her as his wife. Suparṇa agreed to carry her to Kaśerudvīpa each day and return her at night; on the journey back toward Vārāṇasī, she and Āśuga rode together on Suparṇa’s back.
Brahmadatta later banished Suśroṇī and Āśuga from the city on the same ass. She agreed to the robber chief’s offer to discard Āśuga and live with him, but the next day he took her clothes and ornaments and abandoned her by the river Karada. An old jackal promised to petition the king to restore her in exchange for daily meat; Brahmadatta restored her to her former position, and she continued giving the jackal meat each day, even after it threatened her.
