Pausanias' Description of Greece

Jason

Family: mortal · Role: hero · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 1

The accounts say that Phalerus, Micon, Acastus, Castor, Pollux, Euphemus and Ancæus sailed with Jason to Colchis. At Corinth, Medea enabled him to become king, and they had children. In Book 5, he is shown wooing Medea, with Aphrodite encouraging them; he is also depicted wrestling Peleus in a closely matched contest.

Eventually, Jason discovered Medea’s hidden children. Though she pleaded for forgiveness, he would not forgive her and sailed away to Iolcus. Accounts name Polyxenus, Mermerus, Medeus, Eriopis and Apis as his children; Mermerus was said to have been torn apart by a lioness, and Apis was killed when Ætolus drove over him in a chariot at the funeral games for Azan. In Thessaly, Jason ranked Gorgias above Polycrates in reputation among the Athenian schools.
