Greek Mythology

Aerope

Role: daughter of Catreus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 3.2

🌐 Also appears in: Greek Tragedy — The Same Myth, Three Voices (as Aerope)

Aerope was the daughter of Catreus and the sister of Clymene, Apemosyne, and Althaemenes. Catreus gave her and Clymene to Nauplius to be sold in foreign lands. She later became the wife of Plisthenes, who fathered Agamemnon and Menelaus.

She was also the wife of Atreus, and the mother of Agamemnon and Menelaus, who are named as sons of Atreus and Aerope. Aerope loved Thyestes, and the account says that he had debauched her; she gave “it” to him.
