Tolmides
Family: Athenian · Role: commander · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 4 · Part 3
As an Athenian commander, Tolmides led an expedition around Peloponnese and burnt Lacedaemon’s arsenal; the account identifies him as “son of Tolmaeus.” The Athenians then captured Chaeronea and enslaved its inhabitants. After their defeat at Coronea, they evacuated Boeotia under a treaty, and the exiled Boeotians regained their independence.
In Book 3, Tolmides is identified as the father of Theaenetus, a soothsayer who, with Eupompides, proposed that the besieged Plataeans escape over the enemy’s walls. About 220 Plataeans made their escape during a night raid, aided by the storm.
