Abbé Scarron
Also known as: Monsieur Scarron / little Scarron / the abbé · Role: abbé · First appears: Chapter 20
In chapter 20, Athos planned to visit Abbé Scarron with a letter of introduction, expecting to meet friends there, and Marie Michon said she would go there as well for a few minutes. In chapter 21, Scarron became crippled after escaping a hostile carnival crowd by plunging into an icy river: “Scarron was heated, the cold seized on him, and when he reached the farther bank he found himself crippled.”
Anne of Austria then granted him the title of the queen’s invalid and a pension of fifteen hundred francs. Scarron continued receiving Monsieur de Gondy despite opposition, and Mazarin stopped the pension, while Scarron also continued receiving Monsieur Gilles Despreaux, who thought ill of him. Aramis introduced Athos to him, and Scarron called for Champenois to roll him to bed.
Scarron admired Frances d’Aubigné, calling her charming; after their conversation, she looked back at him with interest while he watched her “with eyes of love.”
