Untamo

In Runo XXXI, Untamo threatened his brother Kalervo, vowed to destroy his people, then led an armed force against them, slaughtering Kalervo’s folk and burning his house. Only Kullervo's mother, pregnant, was left alive; Untamo’s people took her home to serve them. When her son was born, she named him Kullervo, while Untamo called him “the Battle-hero.”

Untamo’s people tried to drown Kullervo, burn him on a pyre, and hang him from an oak, but he survived each attempt. At length, Untamo gave up trying to destroy him and raised him as a slave beneath his orders. In Runo XXXI, he sold Kullervo to Ilmarinen in Carelia; in Runo XXXVI, Kullervo slaughtered Untamo’s entire tribe and burned their houses.
