Dubhtach

Also known as: the Beetle of Ulster · Family: Ulstermen · Role: warrior · First appears: The Exile of the Sons of Usnach · Glenn Masain Version · Part 1

In the Book of Leinster version of The Exile of the Sons of Usnach, Dubhtach slew Mane and Fiachna, son of Feidelm, and three hundred Ulstermen fell in the fighting involving him, Conor and Fergus mac Rog. The account also says that “Dubhtach slew the women of Ulster.” In the Glenn Masain version, on the morrow after the sons of Usnach were slain, Dubhtach, Fergus mac Rog, Cormac and their armies fought Conor’s household at Emain Macha, killing Maine and three hundred others; they destroyed and burned Emain Macha, and Conor’s women were slain.

In The Driving of the Cattle of Flidais, Dubhtach and Ailill Finn wounded one another at a ford: Dubhtach’s spear pierced Ailill’s thighs, and Ailill’s javelin passed through Dubhtach. Flidais threw her cloak over the three wounded men and cared for them in the castle, undertaking their healing.
