Iagoo
Also known as: old Iagoo / the great boaster / the marvellous story-teller / the traveller and the talker · Role: friend of Nokomis · First appears: III · Hiawatha’s Childhood
In III · Hiawatha’s Childhood, Iagoo, a friend of Nokomis, made Hiawatha a bow and arrows and sent him into the forest to hunt a famous roebuck. In XI · Hiawatha’s Wedding-Feast, he is named as Nokomis’s friend; he had carved the little Hiawatha’s cradle and later taught him to make bows and arrows. At the wedding-feast, Iagoo began telling the guests “a tale of wonder” about Osseo.
In XVI · Pau-Puk-Keewis, at Iagoo’s lodge, Pau-Puk-Keewis taught him the game of Bowl and Counters, and Iagoo boasted, “I can beat you, Pau-Puk-Keewis.” Pau-Puk-Keewis won the players’ treasures and Face-in-a-Mist, Iagoo’s nephew, as his attendant.
