Osseo

Role: son of the Evening Star · First appears: XII · The Son of the Evening Star · Part 1

In Iagoo’s story, told at Hiawatha’s wedding-feast, Oweenee rejected her suitors and married Osseo, who was old and ugly. At a great feast, Osseo was restored to youth and beauty, while Oweenee was changed into an old woman.

In “XII · The Son of the Evening Star,” Osseo’s father broke the spells that bound him and gave him back his youth and beauty. The wigwam alighted at the Evening Star, where Osseo reunited with his father and lived with him in peace for many years. His father warned him about Wabeno, the magician who had transformed Osseo into an old man. Oweenee bore Osseo a son, and Osseo opened a silver cage to let its birds loose for the boy to shoot at.
