The Song of Hiawatha

Kabibonokka

Also known as: the North-Wind / the fierce Kabibonokka · Family: Four Winds · Role: the North-Wind · First appears: II · The Four Winds · Part 1

In “II · The Four Winds,” Mudjekeewis gave the North-Wind to Kabibonokka, one of his children, and the winds were assigned stations in the heavens while Mudjekeewis kept the West-Wind. Kabibonokka entered Shingebis’s lodge at night, but could not endure its heat and laughter; he stamped the snow and made the ice thicker. Shingebis wrestled with him all night until Kabibonokka retreated, baffled and beaten, to the kingdom of Wabasso.

In “IV · Hiawatha and Mudjekeewis,” Kabibonokka is named among Hiawatha’s brothers, along with Wabun and Shawondasee.
