The Song of Hiawatha

Shawondasee

Also known as: South-Wind / the South-Wind · Family: Four Winds · Role: the South-Wind · First appears: II · The Four Winds · Part 1

In “II · The Four Winds,” Mudjekeewis gave Shawondasee the South-Wind, along with the East-Wind to Wabun and the North-Wind to Kabibonokka, Shawondasee’s brother. The winds took stations in the heavens, while Mudjekeewis kept the West-Wind. At the prairie, Shawondasee sighed and puffed away a dandelion he had mistaken for a maiden.

In “XVII · The Hunting of Pau-Puk-Keewis,” the South-Wind buoyed and carried Pau-Puk-Keewis and the brants northward.
