The Twelve Caesars

Lucius

Family: Julio-Claudian · Role: son of Augustus · First appears: Augustus 26

In the Augustus 26 period, Augustus presented Lucius and Caius Caesar in the forum as they entered public life, “his two sons, Caius and Lucius.” Augustus also built a portico and basilica in their names. Lucius was the child of Agrippa and Julia, and Augustus adopted him and Caius Caesar at home through a ceremony of purchase from their father.

By Augustus 64, Augustus had advanced Lucius and Caius Caesar to state offices while they were still very young, and personally instructed them in reading, swimming, and other rudiments of knowledge. Lucius was among Agrippa (grandson), Julia (granddaughter), and Agrippina the Elder, and stood alongside Caius Caesar as one of Augustus’s heirs.

Lucius died at Marseilles within eighteen months of Caius Caesar’s death in Lycia. Later, Tiberius said that Caius Caesar and Lucius had been “both carried off in the space of three years”; before this, he had declared that his retirement was meant to avoid suspicion of rivalry with them.
