The New Testament

Elias

Family: Israel · Role: prophet · First appears: Matthew 17

Elias, a prophet of Israel, appeared with Moses on a high mountain and spoke with Jesus: “And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.” The same appearance was recorded with Moses and Jesus, while Jesus also said that Elias had already come; the disciples understood that he meant John the Baptist, who had been treated as they wished.

Later, Elias interceded to God against Israel, and God answered that He had reserved seven thousand who had not bowed to Baal’s image. Elias then prayed earnestly, and rain ceased for three years and six months; when he prayed again, rain returned and the earth brought forth fruit: “And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”
