Matthias (son of Margalus)
Also known as: Matthias · Family: Jewish · Role: teacher of the laws · First appears: Book I, Chapter 33
Matthias, son of Margalus, was a Jewish teacher of the laws. In Book I, Chapter 33, he was identified with Judas (son of Sepphoris) as one of the two most skillful teachers of the laws in Jerusalem: “they were, the one Judas, the son of Sepphoris, and the other Matthias, the son of Margalus.”
At Jerusalem, followers of Matthias and Judas (son of Sepphoris) lowered themselves from the temple and cut down the golden eagle at midday. Herod ordered the rabbins and those who had cut down the eagle to be executed for sacrilege, while others who were caught were delivered to the proper officers to be put to death.
