Joktan

Family: Descendants of Shem · Role: son of Eber · First appears: Noah's Descendants Spread Abroad

Joktan was the son of Eber and brother of Peleg. His name was linked to the shortening of human lifespans: “The brother of Peleg was called Joktan, because the duration of the life of man was shortened in his time.” While Noah was still alive, Joktan was appointed prince over the descendants of Shem.

When the twelve pious men were imprisoned at Joktan’s house, he secured them a seven days’ respite and, during the night, arranged for fifty attendants to carry them on mules to the mountains. He tried in vain to persuade Abraham to flee, but Abraham refused. Though kin to the men on trial, Joktan was described as God-fearing and sought to save them.
