Shebna

Family: Judah · Role: treasurer over the house · First appears: Isaiah 22

In Isaiah 22, Shebna serves as treasurer over the house when Isaiah is sent to address him on behalf of God. God declares that he will be carried away captive, die in a distant country, and be driven from his station: “And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down.”

In Isaiah 36, Shebna appears as the scribe alongside Eliakim and Joah before Rabshakeh, asking him to speak in the Syrian language and hearing his challenge to Hezekiah. Shebna then returns to Hezekiah with the others, their clothes rent, and reports Rabshakeh’s words. In Isaiah 37, Hezekiah sends Shebna with Eliakim and the elders of the priests to seek Isaiah’s prophetic help.
