Rabshakeh
Family: Assyria · Role: messenger · First appears: Isaiah 36
In Isaiah 36, Sennacherib sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem with a great army to address Hezekiah. Rabshakeh invoked God, saying, “the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it,” and asked Hezekiah, through Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah, what confidence he trusted in. When they asked him to speak in the Syrian language rather than the Jews’ language, he instead commanded them to carry his message to Hezekiah.
In Isaiah 37, Sennacherib is identified as Rabshakeh’s master, the king who sent him to reproach the living God.
