Plutarch's Lives

Aristotle

Family: Greece · Role: philosopher · First appears: Comparison of Alcibiades with Coriolanus

Aristotle, philosopher of Greece, was associated with Nicias as a parent and with Timaeus through “This sort of contention and rivalry with others in matter of style.” When Philip sent for him to instruct his son Alexander, he rewarded Aristotle for the care he took in educating him. For a time, Alexander cherished Aristotle “no less, as he was wont to say himself, than if he had been his father.”

Callisthenes was Aristotle’s near friend and, as the son of Aristotle’s niece Hero, had been educated in Aristotle’s house. Upon Aristotle’s death, Antipater referred to him in a letter connected with a comparison of Alcibiades and Coriolanus.
