Le Morte d'Arthur

Prince Boudwin

Also known as: Boudwin / the good Prince Boudwin · Family: Cornwall · Role: prince · First appears: Book X, Chapter XXXII

In Book X, Chapter XXXII, Prince Boudwin of Cornwall destroyed the Saracen fleet and defeated its invading army: “those three ships set on fire all the ships, that none were saved.” He was the brother of King Mark, the husband of Anglides, and the father of Alisander. He loved Sir Tristram, and because he was better beloved throughout the country, King Mark turned against him.

King Mark treacherously killed Prince Boudwin with a dagger, striking him in the heart so that he never spoke again. Sir Tristram, Sir Dinas, Sir Fergus, and the other knights mourned him, for “that prince was passingly well beloved.” In the following chapter, Sir Sadok allowed Anglides to escape with Alisander after she promised that her son would avenge Prince Boudwin’s death.
