Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Sadok

Also known as: Sadok · Family: castle · Role: knight · First appears: Book VII, Chapter XXVI

In Book VII, at Castle Perilous, Sir Sadok arrived with Sir Tristram and Sir Dinas, joining Dame Lionesse and the castle’s party against Arthur’s knights. He was a friend of Sir Tristram and Sir Dinas, and accompanied Dame Lionesse and Sir Ironside; later, he rivalled Sir Petipase, who overthrew him in an encounter.

In Book X, King Mark charged Sir Sadok to bring back Anglides and Alisander, but Sir Sadok allowed them to escape after Anglides promised revenge for Prince Boudwin’s death. He deceived King Mark by claiming that Alisander had drowned, then, when the truth was discovered, declared, “for wit thou well that I saved Alisander his life,” accusing Mark of murdering Boudwin. Mark sought to kill him, but Sir Sadok slew the four knights sent against him and later killed the false knight who revealed Alisander’s whereabouts; Sir Tristram, Sir Dinas, and Sir Fergus would not harm him. At La Beale Isoud’s request, he searched for Sir Tristram, found him imprisoned by King Mark, ambushed Mark at the Castle of Tintagil, and slew Mark’s four nephews. He then told Sir Dinas of Mark’s treason, helped organize the defenses of Liones, and with Dinas imprisoned Mark at Isoud’s request.

Later in Book X, Sir Sadok appeared as the brother of Sir Edward and cousin of Sir Gawaine. He rivalled Sir Palomides, who knocked him from his horse, while Sir Sadok unhorsed the King of North Wales. In Book XX, Sir Launcelot gave him the Earldom of Surlat.
