Xenophon's Hellenica

Conon

Family: Athenians · Role: general · First appears: Book 1, section 4

At Athens, Conon was chosen as a general alongside Alcibiades and Thrasybulus. After the Notium disaster, he was among ten new generals; he later sailed from Andros to Samos with twenty ships and took command of the Athenian squadron. When Lysander captured the Athenian fleet at Chersonesus, Conon escaped with eight ships, stopping at Abarnis to take the enemy’s great sails before seeking refuge with Evagoras in Cyprus.

At Cnidus, Conon commanded the Hellenic squadron alongside Pharnabazus’s Phoenician fleet in the defeat of the Lacedaemonians, in which Peisander was killed. Conon and Pharnabazus then toured the islands and maritime states, expelling Spartan governors. At Ephesus, Pharnabazus gave him forty ships and ordered him to meet at Sestos; he also followed Conon’s advice on how to keep the states friendly. Pharnabazus sent Conon to Athens with funds for rebuilding the walls, and Conon restored a large portion of them with his crews and paid workers. In 392 B.C., Tiribazus arrested and imprisoned him.
