Bahvannapāna
Family: Videha · Role: son of Annapāna; later king · First appears: Chapter VIII
Bahvannapāna was born to Annapāna and the daughter of the king of Panchāla. After Annapāna died, the king entrusted him and his mother to the Purohita. One day, while his mother was away, Bahvannapāna ate the cock’s head the Purohita had reserved for himself; after an omen identified the eater as a future king, the Purohita resolved to kill him.
His mother sent him away to his grandfather’s land, and Bahvannapāna fled to Videha. There, the ministers recognized him as their prince and consecrated him king as Janaka; his former name fell into disuse.
