In Chapter VIII, after Annapāna fell ill and died, the king gave his daughter and her son, Bahvannapāna, to the Purohita, and she lived happily with him. The Purohita asked his wife to cook a cock he had reserved for himself; while she was away, Bahvannapāna ate its head.

When an omen identified the boy as a future king, the Purohita decided to kill him. His wife told Bahvannapāna to leave the country for his grandfather’s land, and he fled to Videha.
