The Song of Roland

Tierri

Also known as: Tierris / Tierry · Family: Franks · Role: baron · First appears: Laisses CCV–CCX

In Laisses CCV–CCX, Tierri helps Naimes, Aceline and his brother Gefrei d'Anjou revive Charles and carry him beneath a pine. In Laisses CCLXXI–CCLXXVI, when the barons ask Charles to pardon Guenes, Tierri alone opposes their plan. In Laisses CCLXXVII–CCLXXXII, he denounces Guenes as a traitor and argues that he should be hanged and slain.

Pinabel challenges Tierri to contest his judgment, and both pledge themselves for combat before Charles. At Aix, they fight a judicial duel, shattering each other’s shields and tearing their armor. In Laisses CCLXXXIII–CCLXXXVIII, Tierri kills Pinabel, winning the battle.
