Xenophon's Hellenica

Proxenus of Tegea

First appears: Book 6, section 5, part 1/4

At Tegea, Proxenus was allied with Callibius in seeking a confederacy of the Arcadian population, with decisions of its common assembly binding the individual states. He and Stasippus’s opposing party fought a battle in which Proxenus and some of his companions were killed and the rest put to flight, while Stasippus’s party prevailed.

Later, debate over the Mantineans’ support for Proxenus and his friends recalled that they “were put to death by the party with Stasippus.”
