The Peloponnesian War

Aristocrates

Family: Four Hundred · Role: colonel · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 26 · Part 2

At Athens, Aristocrates, son of Scellias and one of the generals and officeholders under the oligarchy, joined Theramenes and others in organizing opposition to the administration. They demanded that the Five Thousand exist in reality and that the constitution be placed on a fairer basis.

At Piraeus, Aristocrates was a colonel among the heavy infantry building the wall in Eetionia. He and his tribe seized Alexicles, a general under the oligarchy, and confined him in a house. After Alexicles was released and the fortification pulled down, the heavy infantry assembled at the theatre of Dionysus and resolved to march into the city; they later agreed to hold an assembly there to restore concord.
