The Legends of the Jews, Volume I

Japheth

Role: son · First appears: The Curse Of Drunkenness

When Noah was covered by his sons, Shem and Japheth carried a garment on their shoulders and, walking backward with averted faces, covered their father’s nakedness. Noah blessed them, declaring that Japheth’s sons would dwell in Shem’s academies: “God will grant a land of beauty to Japheth, and his sons will be proselytes dwelling in the academies of Shem.”

Later, Japheth built a city and named it Adataneses for his wife. In the year 1569 after the creation of the world, Noah divided the earth by lot among Japheth, Ham, and Shem; “the north became the inheritance of Japheth,” while Ham received the south. The three brothers then divided their allotted portions among their own children by lot.
