The New Testament

Nicodemus

Family: Pharisees · Role: ruler of the Jews · First appears: John 3

In John 3, Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews, comes to Jesus by night, addressing him as Rabbi and recognizing him as a teacher from God: “for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.” Their relationship is described as both suitor and mentor.

By John 7, Nicodemus challenges those judging Jesus before hearing him: “Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?” In John 19, he joins Joseph of Arimathaea in preparing and burying Jesus’s body in a new sepulchre, winding it in linen with spices according to Jewish burial custom.
