The Peloponnesian War

Lichas

Family: Argos · Role: envoy · First appears: Book 5 · Chapter 15 · Part 4

At Argos, Lichas and Ampelidas applied to renew the treaty, but Argos refused. After the Argives later accepted the Lacedaemonians’ proposal for accommodation, they abandoned their league with the Mantineans, Eleans, and Athenians and allied with the Lacedaemonians. The material identifies Lichas as the son of Arcesilaus, a Lacedaemonian.

By the time the Peloponnesians were at Cnidus, a quarrel had arisen with Tissaphernes over the treaty of Therimenes. Lichas declared that they could not accept a convention making the King master of states formerly ruled by him or his fathers. Earlier, he had invited Tissaphernes to conclude a better treaty, saying they would not recognize the existing agreements or accept pay on those terms.
